Truffles and Smokey

Research has proven that pets improve quality of life, reduce stress and have a positive impact on health. People with pets have been found to have lower cholesterol and triglyceride levels when compared to people who did not have pets, even when matched for weight, diet, and smoking habits. Stockbrokers who had dogs or cats in their offices when they had to carry out stressful tasks had smaller increases in blood pressure than those who did not have a pet present (source: www.peteducation.com). Due to the nature of our work, we often work under stressful conditions and at odd hours or for extended periods. The office can be a lonely place after regular working hours. One of the advantages of having a veterinarian as our landlord, is his encouragement to share our office with kindred spirits. Therefore, after leasing for more than 18 months, we finally made the decision to rescue two kittens from the local shelter.

Meet Truffles and Smokey.

Truffles, a one-year old mother of eight kittens, is the oldest of our pet family.  Her eight kittens were adopted by families throughout the community via the shelter before CAB adopted her. She was named by CAB owners for her dark chocolate coloring and “sweet” temperament (and our partiality for dark chocolate!). Truffles is very mild mannered, loves to lounge in the office windows and has a fondness for Pam, but is willing to seek tummy rubs from anyone who will provide them.

Smokey, also named for his coloring as he is the color of smoke (blue-gray), is nearing six months in age.  He is a kitten to the core!  He loves to play, is ornery as can be (toilet paper is a favorite), and tends to spend his time in the front office wreaking havoc with the cat toys. He is also a cuddler and can be found on someone’s lap at any given time during the day.

It is difficult not to take a few moments out of every day to enjoy the easy, quiet nature of these two very individual personalities, keeping all of us focused on what is really important – life.

We realize, however, that some people have allergies to pets and, therefore, wanted to share information about Truffles and Smokey in the event you wish to use our office for meetings.  We keep the kittens out of the conference room; however, we encourage anyone with allergies to participate in meetings by conference call or that meeting hosts consider alternate locations if any attendees indicate an allergy to pets.
